Driving in Oman: Traffic Rules, Speed Limits & Fines You Should Know
Know the Rules Before You Drive
Oman has some of the best roads in the region, but respecting traffic law is essential for a safe, fine-free trip. Traffic in the Sultanate drives on the right-hand side of the road.
Speed Limits
- Dual-carriageway highways: usually up to 120 km/h depending on posted signs.
- Single-lane intercity roads: commonly 80 to 100 km/h.
- Inside cities and residential areas: between 40 and 80 km/h, and lower near schools.
Fixed and mobile speed cameras are widespread on most roads, and the posted sign in front of you is always the reference.
Common Violations to Avoid
- Using a mobile phone while driving.
- Failing to fasten seat belts for all passengers.
- Overtaking on the hard shoulder or from the right.
- Not keeping a safe following distance.
- Driving under the influence of alcohol, which carries severe penalties.
If You Have an Accident
- Call the Royal Oman Police on 9999 and do not move the vehicle before obtaining a police report.
- Notify the rental company immediately, as the police report is required to activate insurance.
- Photograph the scene and the damage from several angles.
Fines and Renter Responsibility
Traffic fines are linked to the vehicle plate, and under the rental agreement the renter is responsible for fines incurred during the rental period, so it is best to check your violations before returning the car.
The Al-Tashkeelat Al-Raida team provides 24/7 emergency support and a replacement vehicle when needed so your journey continues safely.
