Car Rental Insurance in Oman Explained: Excess, CDW & Full Cover

Why You Should Understand Your Cover First

Most rental disputes come from misunderstanding the insurance clause. Clarifying the cover level and the excess amount before you take the keys protects you from unexpected costs.

Common Levels of Cover

  • Third-party liability: mandatory, and covers damage you cause to others only, not to the rental car itself.
  • Collision Damage Waiver (CDW): covers damage to the rental vehicle while leaving an excess payable by the renter.
  • Super or full cover: an extra daily fee that reduces the excess or removes it entirely.
  • Personal accident insurance: covers the driver and passengers in case of injury.

What Is the Excess?

The excess is the amount the renter pays out of pocket when damage occurs before insurance covers the remainder. The lower the excess, the higher the daily cover fee, and vice versa.

Situations Often Excluded

  • Driving on sand or unpaved tracks in a vehicle not intended for it.
  • Undercarriage damage, or tyres and rims under some contracts.
  • Damage caused by crossing wadis or flood water.
  • Driving by anyone not registered as an authorised driver in the contract.
  • Accidents without a Royal Oman Police report.

Questions to Ask Before Signing

  • What is the excess amount in Omani Rials?
  • Does the cover include gravel roads?
  • How are tyre and windscreen damages calculated?
  • Can a second driver be added, and at what fee?
