Wadi and Mountain 4x4 Driving: Essential Safety Tips in Oman

A Great Adventure That Needs Real Preparation

Wadis and mountain tracks are among the finest experiences in Oman, but they demand the right vehicle, some skill, and preparation. These tips help you explore them safely.

Before You Set Off

  • Confirm your contract permits unpaved driving, since some agreements exclude it from insurance.
  • Check the tyres, spare wheel, jack, and wheel wrench.
  • Carry enough water, a full tank, a phone charger, a torch, and a tow rope.
  • Download offline maps and tell someone your route.

On Mountain Tracks

  • Use low gear: on descents to reduce brake use and prevent overheating.
  • Uphill priority: the ascending vehicle has right of way on narrow roads.
  • Do not cut corners: and use the horn at blind bends.
  • Respect the signs: some ascents, such as Jebel Akhdar, are legally restricted to 4x4 vehicles.

In Wadis and Sand

  • Check the forecast before you go and leave the wadi bed immediately if rain is possible.
  • Never cross flowing water or water of unknown depth, as most wadi fatalities happen during crossings.
  • Deflate tyres for sand driving, then reinflate before returning to asphalt.
  • Travel with a group or a second vehicle when heading into remote dunes.

In an Emergency

Call the Royal Oman Police on 9999, and in remote areas stay close to your vehicle because it is far easier to spot than a person alone.

The Al-Tashkeelat Al-Raida fleet includes 4x4 vehicles prepared for rough tracks, backed by round-the-clock roadside assistance.
